Not Your Ordinary Battery Charger Feb 21, 2010 This La Crosse BC-9009 battery charger does it all. If you want to recharge a battery, just insert the battery and it gets charged. If the battery isn't fully discharged, choose the second mode to discharge and then recharge it. If you think the battery isn't lasting as long as it should, choose to condition it -- the battery will be discharged and recharged until it reaches maximum capacity. The fourth mode will test your battery and give you a readout of its capacity.
The charger will test a battery when inserted and on two occasions refused to recharge them, suggesting the battery is at the end of its useful life. I inserted those two batteries in another charger to charge them a bit and then put them in the La Crosse where they charged. I haven't used those two batteries in a real life situation to confirm they are bad, but they were at least five years old and I suspect the BC-9009 charger made a correct diagnosis.
The list price is around $70 but I bought it here at Amazon for $35.00.
It comes with 4-AA batteries, 4-AAA batteries, and adapters to use the AA batteries as C or D batteries.
I am completely happy with my purchase, and at $35 consider it a bargain.
BTW, a few weeks after my purchase, the La Crosse folks sent me e-mail saying the power supply may not be up to their standards, and are sending me a more powerful replacement. That's great customer support in my book.

la Crosse warranty service is fake. Feb 16, 2010 I sent my BC-90009 for warranty repair.
I've been told that unit is backorder and I'll get replacement after 6(six!) months or they can send me MUCH CHEAPER BC700.With no other option I agreed to get BC700.

Great Charger Jan 27, 2010 If you are looking for the best AA/AAA Battery charger - then look no where else. I have had no less the 5 "other" battery Chargers - this is by far the Best. It takes care of refreashing/recharging and gives you a read out of what is happening. I wish I would of know about this earlier but now I do and I will be adding another one to the house as we are always going through Batteries. This is my way of cutting cost and helping the enviroment (LIL bit). Folks - JUST BUY THIS CHARGER - IT WORKS GREAT!!
Cheers,

Another Meltdown, trying the BC-700 instead. Jan 22, 2010 As with many other reviewers, I had a meltdown after only a few days use. One of the LCD screens turned black and the 1 position button sank down. I was lucky enough to be home when it happened, but one of my batteries was already very hot when I interrupted the charge. I'm not sure if the battery would have just exploded, or if a fire would have started, but I'm happy I didn't find out. Needless to say I returned the charger and asked for a refund rather than an exchange (which Amazon was very good about).
The only comparable alternative chargers seem to be the Maha MH-C9000 and the La Crosse BC-700. I looked into the Maha MH-C9000, but the price and clunky user interface didn't impress me. The La Crosse BC-700, however, has the same user interface and the BC-9009, and I wasn't able to find any reports of meltdowns on the internet. The only (possible) downside is the lack of extras and a lower charge rate, but since I already have rechargeables, and prefer to charge them around 200 mAh, the BC-700 should suit me fine.

Great for Wii controllers and cameras Jan 21, 2010 We use this to recharge our Wii controllers, it has done what is expected. I had other batteries I suspected were dead, and this device confirmed that they were bad cells.
Good gaget to have for AA alone. This only charges 4 at a time, but can do either AA or AAA.
Glad to have it.
