John Palmer is the Next Generation of Homebrewing Jul 21, 2010
Yes, we all probably started with Charlie Papzian's book which is fine, but he is the "old generation" of homebrewing. Within the last 15 or so years, the hobby of homebrewing has matured. Equipment has gotten better and ingredients are of higher quality. How To Brew is up to date and utilizes the most current brewing knowledge. John Palmer also helps to dispel many of these Old Generation paradigms.
Being an Enginneer, I respect the fact that all of his information is backed up with sound science which is essential in learning how to brew. This book is a must have reference book if you have brewed once or if you have brewed for 20 years.

Charlie Papazian's book Complete Joy of Homebrewing made my love grow for the hobby, Palmers book made me know nearly everything there is to know about the hobby.

I bought this book as a starting point because I had never tried home brewing. As a complete newbie I found the language very easy to follow and very informative. I loved the organization of the book as well. Knowing that everyone who picked up the book would be ready to brew, the author started with a "quick start" guide to get us going. The rest of the book provides a wealth of information, and gives hombrewers the change to learn progressively and dig as deep as they want. As a novice home brewer I continue to refer to this book every time I brew a batch. If you are new to home brewing and want a one-stop shop book to learn and use as a reference, How to Brew is for you.

This book is very thorough. Great for a beginner (Me). Buy it before you brew your first batch.

Along with so many other reviewers who have purchased this book, I can recommend Palmer's book for homebrewers. As a new brewer I've discovered that there probably isn't any book out there that answers all questions, but this one holds an amazing amount of information for both the extract brewer and the all-grain brewer. The lay-out is such that it involves a bit of hopscotch, not necessarily a bad style. I find Papasian's book to be warmer and fuzzier and more encouraging for a first time homebrewer, but Palmer's is definitely a must-have on the shelf.
